As we all know an unmanned ship has reached Mars. So the big question - Is there life on Mars? But seriously, NASA his beginning its exploration of mars with Spirit, the Martian rover. Well into its ninth day, it is experiencing some intense temperature changes, but keeping cool and taking lots of pictures. Its equipment has also detected carbonates.

Spirit’s identical twin, Opportunity, landed on the opposite side of Mars in Meridiani Planum on January 25th.

First Look at Spirit on Mars

This mosaic image taken by the navigation camera on the Mars
Exploration Rover Spirit shows a 360 degree panoramic view of the
rover on the surface of Mars.

This near-true-color scene is part of the 360° panorama taken by Spirit's Pancam. The site in Gusev Crater is generally flat, but several small impact craters loom nearby. The hills are about 3 kilometers to the east; the highest peaks are about 100 meters tall. Many of the rocks are impact ejected.
